Nothing but yourself

Nothing but yourself

“Two years he walks the Earth. No phone, no pool, no pets, no cigarettes. Ultimate freedom. An extremist. An aesthetic voyager whose home is the road. Escaped from Atlanta. Thou shalt not return, 'cause "the West is the best." And now after two rambling years comes the final and greatest adventure. The climactic battle to kill the false being within and victoriously conclude the spiritual revolution. Ten days and nights of freight trains and hitchhiking bring him to the great white north. No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees, and walks alone upon the land to become lost in the wild.”

Inspiration or Fool?

Christopher McCandless writes this paragraph in his journal and acknowledges how he is the only thing that he needs for his getaway in Alaska. In the beginning of the book, Chris offered to give Gallien his watch, comb, and the rest of his money because he did not need anything but the necessities in life. He felt that life would be much simpler and better without a lot of materials. Also, in the story, it's explained how Chris only needed three objects which were a rifle, road map, and backpack. In my opinion, I would not have gotten rid of a lot of the materials he disregarded, just in case an emergency occurred and I needed help.

Alone, but never lonely.

Alone, but never lonely.

“He wasn't antisocial—he always had friends, and everybody liked him—but he could go off and entertain himself for hours. He didn't seem to need toys or friends. He could be alone without being lonely” (Krakauer 107).

Inspiration or Fool?

As Carine is describing Chris, she touches on how self-sufficient he was and also how he was in a world of his own. When he started his journey to Alaska, he left no notice for his family to inform them but he was totally okay with traveling by himself because he enjoyed being alone and away from other people. Also, in the beginning of the story, it's explained that Chris meets a man and speaks with him for a little while. The man who chris was speaking with, Gallien, offered to drive Chris to anchorage and help him to survive. Chris didn't feel the need to go, he knew he was just fine on his own. He decided to not have relationships with people because he wanted his journey to be purely with only himself. Chris was fearless and took chances by himself to fulfill his life and his outstanding journey.

Taking Steps Fearlessly

Taking Steps Fearlessly

"So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit of a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experience" (Krakauer 57).

Inspiration Or Fool?

As Chris McCandless writes to Ron, he states the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone in order to live a happy and fulfilling life. Chris has learned a valuable lesson in life that people cannot be doing the same thing repetitively and continue to be happy. He knows that he must adventure and explore new ideas and sceneries to find himself as a person. In his life, he was not supported by his parents and did not feel the love and happiness a child should from their parent. In the time of him living unhappy in his life, he figured out the crucial lesson that you need to change something in your life to create a better and more positive outcome. When he adventures in the wild, Chris does not look back to his old past to his parents. He reaches out to a place where he needed to step out of his comfort zone all alone. His passion for nature was so powerful he found happiness.
